How to extend the life and reach of your training content

2 min read Joana Fonseca, Head of Marketing & Inbound Sales

You create an eLearning course, have a live training session or webinar. That’s wonderful, however, how can you make sure the training content lasts longer, continues up to date and reaches more people? That’s what this article is all about.

To produce training content, whether it’s for an online course or for a live training session, it takes time and other resources. To make sure none of these efforts and investment go to waste, there are three things to keep in mind:
- make sure you produce the content considering a long shelf life,
- define a regular cadence for reviewing the content,
- choose an agile training platform that allows you to quickly update and make changes to the content, like bugle.

Besides these overall considerations, there a few practical tips we can share to help you in this endeavour.

1. Make your training available online

Yes, this is the obvious one, but still needs to be addressed. To reach more people, regardless of their location, and at a fraction of the cost of in-person training, making your training available online is paramount. Also, in an online training platform, you can keep your content available for as long as you want. At this time, and in many cases due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most companies have (completely) moved from in-person training to online training.

2. Be careful with time references

When creating the script for your online course, make sure you don’t use time references that can become outdated. If you really need to appoint a specific date, make sure it is always true, for example, instead of “this pricing scheme will take effect starting next week” use instead “this pricing scheme will take effect on April 20th, 2022”.

3. Create short chapters that easy to update

Although some types of training, such as skills training, usually don’t require constant updates, others such as product training are likely to need a higher frequency of reviewing.
To overcome this, it’s important to create smaller chapter in your courses. This will help you easily switch the content of a chapter without the need to update the entire course.
Keep in mind, though, that this tip of short course chapters applies to all types of training, as it’s a practice that will boost retention and engagement among other benefits.

4. Transform live sessions into asynchronous courses

If you have live sessions planned, make sure to record them. Then, with the recording in hand you can create an online learning course from that recording: divide it into smaller chunks, add quizzes, surveys or even assessments and your live session will continue alive for as long as you want.
This is helpful for your attendees, that will be able to review it, but more importantly for those who were unable to join in the live session or that were not yet part of the invitee list.

5.  Make your course available in multiple languages

This is a great way to increase the reach of your training and make it more comfortable and inclusive to your audience, whether they are customers, partners or team members at (or from) different locations.
It may be a bit budget consuming to record each of your courses in different languages. However, you can, with a small budget or even for free, translate your script and add subtitles to your courses. In this article, you can see there many other advantages to using subtitles in your video training.
