In this article, we will continue the step-by-step instructions for creating a training course. It is now time to talk about interactions.

You have gone through the first 4 steps of the process: Scope, Structure, Script and Storyboard. Knowing this core information, you can now focus on adding interactive aspects to your learning experience, which will complement the video chapters.

Interactions may take the shape of quizzes, tasks, seed questions aimed at sparking a debate, attachments and different types of challenges.

You can think of interactions as retention tools: trainers should aim for a variety of interaction options using a combination of evaluation methods, group work — if possible — and individual reflection to enhance the overall training experience. We know that learner interaction is one of the best ways to help trainees succeed.

Interactions also serve the purpose of facilitating practice time, which is essential for any learning experience, and motivating learners along the way. Inter-spacing your video content with short, fun quizzes and seed questions that lead your audience to reflect upon what they were taught is a great way to ensure your training experience is diverse, enticing and effective.

Remember that different interaction types serve different purposes. Resources hold information that is not essential, but that is still relevant to the course. In a course that refers to legal guidelines, for instance, you may choose to add the complete legislation as an attachment. Further reading is usually optional content that is included for students who want to deep-dive into a specific topic. Challenges aim to promote learning by facilitating experience sharing between peers. It is common to create a challenge that asks learners to pair up and discuss, or to write their own experience and share it with the other learners. Quizzes are quick knowledge tests that take place after each unit. They call for direct and closed answers and usually mirror the delivery of the training content, reinforcing memorisation and understanding. As for the final evaluation, it should call for individual interpretation of the course’s content and require a practical application through a case study.

PRO TIP: Choose a training platform where students can interact with the author of the course (or your training manager) using Q&A. There, the student can ask for deeper information about the course’s subject or an explanation about a concept that, for him or her, was not quite clear in the video. After publishing, these Q&A are available to all students offering additional explanations and promoting a strong engagement.


Here are our top-of-mind guidelines to ensure effective interactions:

1. Make sure you use each type of interaction for the intended purpose: don’t include crucial content only in further reading suggestions, make sure the answers to the quizzes can be found in each unit’s contents, and don’t treat the final evaluation as a quiz – students must engage in a different cognitive process.

2. Be assertive and write in a clear way: your language should be fool-proof and crystal-clear. Avoid ambiguity and double meanings.

3. Use different question types when creating your different unit quizzes and the final evaluation. Remember that these act as motivators and different formats (true or false; multiple choice; open-ended questions; mix and match…) become more enticing and fun to complete.

4. Put yourself in the learners’ shoes: think about all these elements from the student’s point of view and try to go through the entire learning experience. You are sure to find areas for improvement and optimisation tweaks.

5. Be careful not to lose the course main theme, which should resonate in each unit and exercise. Whenever possible, try to make a connection with reality: case studies and real-life scenarios are great examples to use.
