What’s the difference between eLearning, Video Training and Micro Learning?

Nowadays, a significant part of our life is digital, mostly spent online. We work online, we communicate online, we have fun online, we share online. Actually, we share a lot online – from work files to family photos - but most of all we share knowledge.

In the last years, digital learning has become increasingly flexible and accessible allowing us to choose the format that best suits us (and our wallet). From youtube to sophisticated LMS, you can access content about almost anything, in different formats, making the learning experience the most important factor because it’s how you relate to the training content that leads to results.

There is a huge selection of learning options available and, with it, specific terminology that can be a bit confusing. In this article, we are going to explain some of the most used concepts: eLearning, Video Training and Micro Learning. Why these three? Because, at bugle, we are frequently asked about what they mean and the difference between them.


Let’s start with the definitions.

eLearning is a very broad concept that encompasses all the training delivered through electronic or online technologies, regardless of its format (webpage, video, pdf, live streaming…), its length or any other feature.

Video Training is the delivery of training in video format. When we say video training, we are focusing on the format presented to the audience. As it is video, there is an underlying electronic base, even if you are using it in a presential environment like a classroom or event.


Micro Learning is a concept related to the length of the learning programme. In this case, “micro” refers to a small amount of something, meaning the delivery of training in small sized pieces of content. This can be a video, an article, a quick answer on how to do something, an email, and so on.

Both Video Training and Micro Learning can be included in an eLearning programme.


Practical application

There are plenty of applications for all three and all of them have advantages.

With eLearning, as you’re making your training available online you are able to reach everywhere in the world without the costs and logistics of traveling and in-person training. It also allows your audience to be able to access your training at any time and at their own schedule, so considerations such as time zones and locations no longer apply. In addition, by creating training that is available online you guarantee that everyone in your audience gets the same learning experience and consistency.

There are many formats you can use online but video is the one preferred for most audiences as it stimulates the senses and enhances attention. In video training, using a presenter allows you to humanize the learning programme and promotes engagement. It is a highly effective format with a proven high retention rate.

Another advantage is its flexibility when creating the courses. With video you can truly adapt your training goals to the different available possibilities such as screen casting for product training, role-playing for behaviour training, animation to explain complex processes, and so on.

As for micro learning, it’s quickly gaining traction due to the lack of time people have in their daily busy lives. With its bite-sized format, micro learning is perfect to be digested on the go. Short and straight to the point is the perfect approach.

A combination of these three is the perfect mix. If you think about it, we spend most of our time with a device in hand, whether it is a computer, a tablet or a mobile. So, if you can deliver training through those devices, you are quite literally, in your audience’s finger tips.

Video is our choice as it offers a higher retention rate when compared to other learning formats. Also, it allows us to adapt different types of videos to specific training goals based on the challenges our customers want to overcome with a specific course. This may include presenters, infographics, screen casting, role plays, demos or animations.

We follow a practical approach to content, focused on the key takeaways, with the goal of driving actual change and effective learning.

An average bugle course has between 1 and 2 hours, divided into modules of 10 to 15 minutes, that are divided into chapters of 2 to 5 minutes each (micro learning). Depending on the subject and learning goals the overall duration will vary.

We go for a modular approach, meaning short pieces of content that can be integrated in the audience’s fast-paced life. This means we create a macro set that includes several micro learning experiences that are valid on their own, regardless of being integrated in a course.

This is how we make it work for both the audience that starts and finishes the course in one sitting, and for the audience that will divide their viewing into several moments. This also allows us to work our courses as a puzzle, mixing chapters and modules to create different learning experiences.

Our video scripts are direct, have short sentences and are not too technical. Our tone is conversational in order to sound natural to the course’s presenter and specially its audience.


We deliver content with a human touch. That’s why our videos are always presented or narrated by a person, ideally someone the audience can relate to in some way. We also focus on the learners’ experience and how they will feel throughout the course – this includes paying special attention to the courses’ look and feel, interactions, and additional non-video resources.
