A great video training course starts with great planning. If you manage to get the first steps of creating a course right, you are sure to have a better result. In this article, you will find the best practices and tips to create the best possible structure for your course, and a course structure template to make it easier for you.

The course structure is the second step of the video training course production and that’s the focus of this article.

But first, it’s important to reference the first step, which is: the scope. This is the step where you define the course target, meaning your intended audience, the course goals both quantitative and qualitative, as well as the business metrics you want to impact (more product usage, shorter sales cycle…). It is in step one that you list and gather your content sources (resources) and you define your subject matter expert(s).

Once you have the scope and input sources set, it is time to move to the course structure. This is the step where you define the sequence of the course content, organize your modules, chapters and additional resources, write down the key topics and considerations for each section and define interactivity and evaluation moments.

This may seem like a daunting task, but we have some guidelines to help you create a consistent course structure, and a template to help you consolidate all this information efficiently and effectively. Here are some tips to consider when creating the course structure:

 In the first module
- Always include a short intro as your first chapter where you clearly state the learning goals and answer the question “why does this course matter to your audience?”. This is essential to gain your audience’s attention and engagement for the rest of the course and is also a compass for all the course structure: remember you want to develop and deliver a course that really adds to your audience. So focus on the impact that it may have in their performance.  


Content modules
- Just as in the course introduction, start each module by listing the highlights of what your audience is going to learn;

- Always focus on the practical side and not on theory and conceptual information. You can add additional resources as attachments if your audience wants to dig deeper into those concepts.
- The content should be structured in a sequential logic

- Don’t include more than three topics per chapter
- Include at least one interaction (quiz, challenge, survey) for each module and learning goal

In the last module
- Include a short conclusion with a quick summary of the learning outcomes, suggestions on how to apply it, and where your audience can find additional information sources.


Finally, keep in mind:
- Estimate the number of words for each chapter and each course video duration (keep in mind that 160 words means, on average, one minute of video)

- Set the course key points for each chapter with bullet points, indicating only the key ideas that should be included (keep your key points short and to the point as well). This will make the script-writing much easier and focused.
